Progressive and humanistic in their approach to work life, Powerex (a division of BC Hydro) asked KAVE to create an environment that would invigorate the the company’s work life.
The building is an old motorcycle factory in the theatre district of Toronto. Evidence of the building’s industrial past was exposed, and as many existing surfaces were maintained as possible. An old service elevator became a feature element, the pattern of windows established the lighting pattern, and cherry ceiling panels were used to discipline and conceal mechanical services.
The main space was designed to foster a studio-like collaborative atmosphere. The need for acoustical privacy was critical, so a high performance acoustic ceiling suspended on springs was installed, to make the suite virtually impermeable to sound.
